Pope Francis’ pontificate was transformative for “Embrace” and “Gifted and Called” Ministries, igniting hope within LGBTQ+ Catholics yearning for a Church that truly embodies Christ’s unconditional love and acceptance. His heartfelt messages and compassionate actions laid the groundwork for genuine conversations among LGBTQ+ Catholics, their families, allies, and the Church. He bravely confronted tough topics, refusing to let rigid norms hinder authentic encounters. Through his humility, tenderness, and mercy, he constantly reminded us that God’s love encompasses all His children.
The Vatican’s approach to LGBTQ+ persons underwent a profound shift under Pope Francis, one that drew global attention. When he famously asked, “Who am I to judge?” he signaled a movement away from exclusion and toward understanding and discernment. This new direction opened the door to deeper discussions in the Diocese of San Bernardino, particularly with parents who faced the challenge of reconciling their child’s identity with their faith. His words comforted grieving hearts, assuring families that love and acceptance are not just compatible with Church teaching but central to it. Through Embrace Ministry gatherings, parents found solace in his messages, feeling permitted to walk alongside their children in faith while identifying their fears.
Perhaps his most poignant gift was his genuine ability to listen—he recognized the sacredness in the joys, struggles, and deep wounds of LGBTQ+ persons and their loved ones. He affirmed their dignity and worth as beloved children of God, deserving of grace and embrace. His pastoral sensitivity illuminated our ministry gatherings, where attendees shared their anguish, desolation, and confusion. His willingness to engage with LGBTQ+ persons gave hope to those who had felt invisible, inspiring them to return to the Church with the assurance that they have a place within it.
Though he didn’t claim to have all the solutions, he recognized that transformation begins with open hearts and that listening has the power to change lives. This standard resonated deeply with our LGBTQ+ diocesan and parish-run ministries, emphasizing that true accompaniment is our fundamental pastoral tool. Pope Francis understood himself as an instrument of God, pleading for peace and mercy, and tirelessly reminded the world that no one is forsaken. Inspired by Pope Francis’ example, our ministries’ pastoral approach reinforced edifying conversations between LGBTQ+ Catholics and clergy, supported families facing challenges, and fostered safe spaces for open dialogue, growth, and transformation.
As we mourn the loss of Pope Francis, we continue the empowering work inspired by his legacy. His impact is not confined to formal statements but lives on vibrantly in the hearts of those he touched, evidenced by his willingness to wash the feet of others with love. His papacy serves as a beacon, leading with meeting people where they are, and reminding us that love is the very heartbeat of the Gospel. We carry forth his spirit of encounter, committed to ensuring that LGBTQ+ Catholics feel heard, welcomed, and included. We resolve to keep open the church doors he widened, reflecting Christ’s infinite mercy—for todos, todos, todos.
