McAdams was one of four people who professed final vows to the Secular Order of Franciscans in December, joining the 52 who already belong to three fraternities of Secular Franciscans spread throughout the diocese. They are the Fraternity of St. Francis and St. Claire (based in Hemet), Fraternity of Padre Pio (based in Moreno Valley) and Fraternity of Immaculada (based in Riverside).

Also professed in December were Camile Page, Maria Rodriguez, and Virginia Haddad.

Known as the Third Order of Franciscans (the first two orders established by St. Francis were religious), the Secular Order calls laypersons to live and promote the values of Francis “out in the world.” In the Diocese of San Bernardino that means anything from cooking meals for and serving the poor; coordinating English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizenship classes; serving as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and lectors; and coordinating parish talks on environmental issues, such as the Climate Change event held in McAdams’ home parish on Jan. 11 (see related story on page one).

“We are taught to live with less,” says Lorraine Cardin. “We live a life of conversion. It’s like taking a spiritual step further.”

It should be no surprise that the election and papacy of Pope Francis has been a source of pride and inspiration for the Secular Order of Franciscans in the diocese.

“Looking at the poor is the part where we connect with him,” says McAdams. “Living a more modest life.”

The process of becoming a Secular Order Franciscan begins with orientation followed by discernment, which includes three years of formation. Candidates undergo academic studying, retreats and interviews before professing.
